155 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MORRIS, William James “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Niagara Falls in 1920. His family later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a youth, he was very active in sports, especially hockey. He joined the Camerons reserves before the war had started and when it did he transferred to the active service. He served in the Army in Canada, England and France (Dieppe) during World War II. While in Britain, he played on the Camerons hockey team. In 1942, the team went on to win the 2nd division championships. On August 19, 1942, he landed in Dieppe, France. While withdrawing, his unit was cut off from the boats on the beach. Bill told the others to get the wounded off while he would keep the Germans occupied by jumping all over shooting and making it look like there was more than just him. He had taken out a German Pill Box before he ran out of ammo at which time he surrendered. For this action, the French government awarded him the Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star for bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Bill was taken Prisoner of War at Dieppe in 1942. Bill passed away in 1970. MUDGE, Albert Edward WWII Albert was born in 1924 in Thornhill, Manitoba. He served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada (Virden, Manitoba) during World War II. Albert passed away in 2000. MULLIGAN (JESSAMAN), Vi WWII Vi was born in England. She served in the British Army during World War II with a Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. She served in the London and Dover areas during the VI missile attacks in 1944. Vi married Cliff Mulligan, a Canadian soldier, on August 11, 1945. Cliff returned to Elkhorn, Manitoba, his hometown, and Vi joined him in July of 1946 when they began farming. Vi was a very active member of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58.
