143 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McKINNY, Robert Jack KOREA Robert was born in 1933 and enlisted in the Canadian Army on February 6, 1951 at the age of seventeen with his mother’s consent. He served in Canada, Korea and Japan as a gunner, radio operator and paratrooper with 1 Light Battery. In 1952, while practicing in Saskatchewan, his parachute failed to open and he was injured. He recovered in time to serve active duty in Korea. He was honourably released on April 26, 1954. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Korean Medal in, the Peacekeeping Medal and the United Nations Korea Medal. Upon release, Jack joined Canada Post where he served for 34 years retiring in 1988 as Post Master in Melita, MB. He was a member of Legions Gladstone #55, Gillan #245 and Melita #127. Melita Legion presented him with the Merit Service Medal, a 50 year pin and a Life Membership. He was also a member of the Korea Veterans Association, Saskatchewan Unit 46. Jack died in 2007 at the age of 74. McLEAN, W. J. “Jim” WWI Jim was born on June 20, 1897 at Pilot Mound, the son of Aaron and Susan McLean. He enlisted with the 46th C.E.F. in World War I. He saw active service in France from 1915 to 1918. He was wounded twice. In World War II, he served with the Veteran’s Guard from 1942 to 1945. On June 10, 1925, he married Winnifred Neighbours at La Riviere, Manitoba. They had two sons and three daughters. Jim passed away on October 13, 1958. McLEOD, Alick Russell KOREA Alick was born to World War I veteran Robert Murray McLeod and Mary (Carrigal) McLeod on December 6, 1926 in Dugald, Springfield, Manitoba. He lived all his life in Dugald. Alick joined Manitoba Telephone System as a linesman in 1947. In 1950, he joined the Canadian Forces attached to R.C.C. of Signals as Private Special Forces 3rd Battalion PPCLI. He was deployed to Korea. Alick contracted malaria and was medically discharged from the Canadian Armed Forces in December of 1950. His service number was H800286 and he was awarded the Korean Medal, U.N. Service Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. When he had recovered, he resumed his employment with MTS. He worked at Winnipeg, Churchill, Lac du Bonnet, Morris and Marden where he and Nancy Clover Fraser of Carman retired in 1983. They had five children: Janice, Tracy, Kathy, Scott and Leslie. When he retired in 1983 he held the position of District Services Management Eastern Region. After military service, Alick was active in the Legion from 1953 and president at the Morden Legion Branch 11 in 1990 and 1991. Alick was a loving father, grandfather and greatgrandfather with twelve grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He passed away on September 30, 1994.
