135 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McDIARMID, Allan C. WWII Allan was born on September 15, 1921 in Gladstone, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Canadian Air Force in the fall of 1942. He had basic training in Brandon, MB for six weeks and then Portage la Prairie for eighteen months in navigation school. There were people from all over the world, including Australia and England. He took flight training in Portage la Prairie, Brandon and Dauphin was followed by Calgary “OTU” for three months, then LaChine, Quebec for posting. He boarded the “Empress of Scotland” to Liverpool and trained in Yorkshire. Allan became one of the RCAF 425 “Alouette” Squadron of bomber command. He flew Halifaxes and Lancasters in six operations over Germany. He then took over the family farm in Helston, MB. In 1999, he retired from farming and moved into Gladstone Legion Lodge. He was past president and past Sergeant-at-Arms of the Gladstone Branch 110 of The Royal Canadian Legion. McDONALD, Hamilton “Hammy” WWII Hammy was raised on a farm near Fleming, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and trained as a pilot. Following graduation from basic pilot training, he proceeded to England where he took further training as a fighter pilot and was sent to a Spitfire Squadron. He served in England and in Normandy during World War II. He was shot down over the British Channel, but was picked up by Air-Sea rescue. At the end of the war, he left the Air Force as a Squadron Leader and went back to the farm. He spent some time in the Saskatchewan Legislature and as a Senator in Ottawa. McGOGY, Allard LeRoy WWII Allard was born in Ashley, McIntosh County, North Dakota on November 25, 1909. His service number was H76148. He served with the 18th Field Battery and 2nd Medium Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery in England, France, Germany, Italy and North Africa. The 18th and 25th Field Battery Units were recognized on January 26, 1942 to Canadian Armoured Corps: 2nd Medium Regiment which is also part of First Canadian Army Troops. Allard was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Allard passed away on October 17, 1960.
