129 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MATSON, Stephen WWII Stephen was born in Gonor, Manitoba in 1918. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Patricia Pats in England, Italy and France during World War II. He was a member of the Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for more than forty years. Stephen passed away in 2004. MAVINS, John Earle WWII, KOREA, SPECIAL DUTY, PEACETIME John was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1913. He served in the NonPermanent Militia from 1930 to 1939 (Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada). He joined the active service in the beginning of World War II and served from 1939 to 1945 in England and in Northwest Europe. In 1950, he was appointed to the Canadian Army Special Force with the rank of Captain, serving under the UN in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Upon returning to Canada, he served as Adjutant – 1 AUU AHQ and subsequently as Camp Commandant HQ in the Saskatchewan Area. Retiring from the Camerons in 1961, he transferred to the Canadian Guards in Ottawa where he attained his Majority and continued to serve until retiring in 1968. He was a member of various Legion Branches for many years before he passed away in 1989. MAWBY, James Turnell “Jim” WWII James was born to Turnell and Eva (Hayes) Mawby at Cypress River, Manitoba on December 17, 1916. Jim enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force when World War II broke out. He served overseas from 1941 to 1945 and was stationed at Linton-on-the-Ouse with the Thunderbirds Squadron as an armourer in 1942. He received three medals: Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939 – 1945. Jim was also mentioned in The Dispatches by the King’s Order for distinguished service and received the Oak Leaf. He returned to Paradise, Nova Scotia where he was training for the war in the Pacific when VE Day was declared. Jim passed away on December 24, 1962.
