127 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MALLETT, Clifford “Cliff” WWII Cliff was born and raised in Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a pilot. He graduated as Sergeant and proceeded overseas. He served during World War II. He was released in 1945 and worked in Sudbury for two years before returning to Elkhorn to manage the family tin shop business. Cliff passed away in July of 1975. MANN, John Plater WWII John was born at Verdun, Quebec in 1920. He served on the high seas during World War II. He entered R.C.N.V.R. September 1940 to 1945; with R.C.N.R. January 1950 – 1955. John qualified Gunnery Rating February 1941; passed professionally for Leading Seaman, July 1941 and passed professionally for Petty Officer, 1944. John was on the H.M.C.S. Otter; H.M.C.S. Pictou; H.M.C.S. Morden; H.M.C.S. Amherst and the H.M.C.S. Port Colborne. In August of 1946, John married Mabel Siddall of Port Arthur. They had three children and resided in Winnipeg until John’s death. When John was aboard the Otter, fire broke out; flames and smoke broke through the wooden upper deck. The crew was unable to control the fire and captain ordered “abandon ship”. One officer and eighteen ratings were lost; two officers and twenty ratings survived. John has his right index amputated due to a depth charge being dropped on his finger. He was granted a “Hurt Certificate”. John had “very good” conduct. MASON, Henry G. WWI & WWII Henry was born in London in 1888. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Field Artillery in England. He served in both World War I and World War II. His medals include the Military Cross, MM Medal, Military Medal, British War Medal, Victory Medal, George Medal (George VI). Henry was a member of the Grandview Legion Branch 14 for many years until he passed away in 1976.
