He joined the Air Force and served in Canada during World War II. John passed away in 2004. MACKAY, John WWI John was born in 1892 in Stornoway, Rosshire, Island of Lewis, Scotland. As a young Scotsman, John immigrated to Canada from Scotland to take up employment as a farm hand in the Binscarth area. When called to military service in 1918, he trained in the Minto Barracks, Winnipeg, Manitoba until he was discharged on demobilization harvest leave in November of 1919. He served with the First Battalion, Manitoba Regiment of the Army during World War I. Returning to Binscarth, he resumed his interest in farming, which was to become his life work for the next thirty-four years. He and his Canadian-born wife, Levenia Honey of Binscarth, married in 1921, raising a family of four children. John and Levenia enjoyed a comfortable retirement in the village of Binscarth for eighteen years until his death in 1972. Levenia died in 1988. Both are buried in the Binscarth cemetery. MAILES, Russell E. WWII Russell was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army in September of 1939 with the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in Canada, England and Italy during World War II. Following training in Dundurn, Saskatchewan and Petawawa, Ontario, he went overseas to Aldershot, England. He took part in the Italian campaign with the First Canadian Division. After his discharge, he married Martha Will from Elkhorn, Manitoba. They spent ten years in Toronto, several years in Brandon then retired in Elkhorn. Russell passed away in 1981 and is buried in the Elkhorn Cemetery.
