121 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LESLIE, Sam WWII Sam was born at McAuley, Manitoba. He joined the Army in 1941 and served in England and in northwest Europe with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during World War II. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1945. Following the war, he moved to Hussar, Alberta where he worked in construction. LUMGAIR, Norman A. WWII Norman was born at Thornhill, Manitoba on April 22, 1922 to Robert W. and H. Louisa Lumgair. He received his education at Orangehill and Wellington Schools, finishing Grade XI in June of 1939. As well as working on the home farm, he enjoyed skiing and skating in the winter and playing ball in the summer. He was taken on strength on February 26, 1942 and trained at various bases in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He sailed for Britain on March 27, 1943. He trained on bases in Britain and was assigned to 408 Squadron at Linton-on-Ouse on February 4, 1944. He made five operational trips in February. The sixth and fatal trip was on March 15, 1944 with Stuttgart as the target. He was awarded the following medals: Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, General Service Medal, A/C Europe Star and 1939 – 1945 Star. He was awarded his Commission posthumously. LUND, Walter “Walt” WWII Walt was born at Elkhorn, Manitoba in 1911. He joined the Army and went overseas with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He served during World War II in Canada, England and in France where he was severely wounded in action and as a result, he lost a leg. He was sent home and discharged from the Army.
