117 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LEE, Thomas WWI Thomas was born in Nottingham, England in 1882. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in March of 1916. He trained at Camp Hughes, Manitoba before sailing for Europe in December of 1916. He served in many of the famous battlefields of Europe during World War I – Hill 70, Arras, Amiens, Cambrai, Canal du Nord and Valenciennes. He was wounded in August of 1917 and returned to active duty in April of 1918. He was with the 16th Battalion Canadian Scottish during the last 100 days and traveled to Cologne as part of the Occupation Force. He returned to Canada in May of 1919. Thomas was appointed postmaster in Carberry, MB in July of 1921, a position he held until his death in 1947. Thomas was a founding member of the Carberry and District Legion 153. He was the Legion’s first treasurer. LEGARIE, Roy E. WWII Roy was born in Virginia, Minnesota, USA in 1926. He enlisted in the Army and served with the PPCLI in Canada during World War II. Roy has been a member of the Fort France Legion Branch 29 for seventy years. LEMIEUX, Gerard J. WWII Gerard was born in St. Hippolyte, Saskatchewan on July 22, 1925 and lived in Paradis Hill, SK for a few years. In 1938, he moved to McCreary, Manitoba where he finished his schooling. In the fall of 1943, Gerard enlisted in the Army and served on active service with the Canadian Army from April 8, 1944 to November 27, 1946. At the time of demobilization, he was Lance/Corporal in the Canadian Provost Corps. His theaters of service were in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939 – 1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After the war, he farmed in Ste. Amelie, MB for a year. In 1948, he moved to Dauphin and was employed by Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Coop for eighteen years. He married Lucille Therrien and had four boys and two girls. He was a member of the Dauphin Legion Branch 20 for thirty years. In 1966, he purchased Dauphin Taxi and was owner/operator until his sudden death in 1982 at the age of 56 in Dauphin.
