107 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KNIGHT, Albert James “Tim” WWII Tim was born on a farm near Clearwater, Manitoba on November 10, 1917. He was active in all forms of sport, particularly hockey and baseball. Tim continued to play baseball into his sixties with the Portage Liniment League. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and qualified as a pilot in 1943. Tim survived a crash in the Welsh Mountains and went on to achieve the rank of Flying Officer. He flew Lancaster Bombers with 433 Squadron. While in England, Tim met and married Celia. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939 – 1945 and Canadian Forces Decoration. He was a member of the Portage La Prairie Legion Branch 65 in Manitoba for 39 years. Tim passed away on December 22, 2006. KOOL, Walter Arie KOREA & PEACETIME Walter was born in Virden, Manitoba in 1929. Walter served for three years with 18th Armored Car Regiment, 12th Manitoba Dragoons. Walter took Canadian Officer Training from 1949 to 1950 with Royal Canadian Armored Corp School at Camp Borden in Ontario. He served in Canada during the years after the Korean War but was never in Korea. He served with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in Virden, Manitoba from 1950 to 1964 and with the 26th Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery, 13th Field Battery in Virden from 1965 to 1970. Major Walter A. Kool was honourably released in March of 1970. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal 1953, Canadian Forces Decoration Service Chevron with Maple Leaf 1956. He has been a Life Member of the Virden Legion Branch 8 for 55 years. KRAWCHUK, Merdo WWII Merdo was born in Fort Frances, Ontario on October 3, 1925. He enlisted in the Army during World War II. He served with the Lake Superior Regiment and Winnipeg Rifles in Aldershot, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received the European Service Award. He is a member of the Fort Frances Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29.
