101 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JONASSON, Herman David WWII Herman was born at Baldur on May 3, 1913, the only son of Halli and Sigurveig Jonasson (deceased). He had two sisters, Mrs. Alla Hunter (deceased) and Mrs. Dora Johnson of Selkirk. Herman enlisted in Winnipeg in July of 1941 with the RCAF. He was stationed at Dafoe, Paulson and Goderich, Ontario, going overseas in December of 1942. He was reported missing in 1944 and presumed dead. Herman was awarded the Victoria Cross. JONSSON, Theodore WWII Theodore was born at Cypress River, Manitoba, the son of Christian B. and Thordis Jonsson. He had five brothers and seven sisters. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1939 with the Grenadiers and served in Jamaica and Hong Kong. He was killed in the “over the hill” Hong Kong battle in 1941. JOSEPH, Joe WWII Joe was born on September 14, 1923 in Markinch, Saskatchewan and was raised in Stockholm, SK where his father ran a grocery store. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He served mainly in the Yukon until his release in 1945. After his discharge, he began farming in Reeder, Manitoba as well as operating a small store and post office in the village. He married Violet Flannery in June of 1956 and they raised a family of five. They moved to Elkhorn, MB in the 1980’s and Joe became a hard working member of the Elkhorn Legion Branch 58 where he was a Life Member.
