99 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JOHNSON, Harry WWI Harry was born in 1892 in Elvaston, Derbyshire, England. He immigrated to the Elkhorn, Manitoba district with his parents in 1906. He enlisted in 1914 with the Fort Garry Horse and served in England, Canada and France during World War I. He trained at Camp Hughes, which is now Camp Shilo. He proceeded overseas and was severely wounded in the Cambrian offensive in France in 1917. He returned to Canada and was discharged. He farmed in the Elkhorn district until his death in August of 1950. JOHNSON, Robert D. “Bob” WWII Bob was born and raised on the family farm in the Burnbank district, north of Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in April of 1941 and trained as an aero-engine mechanic. He served in Canada during World War II. He was discharged as a Corporal in 1945 and began farming. Bob moved to Harding, MB in 1949 to continue farming. He married Joyce Hamilton in 1952 and they raised a family of four. They were active in community affairs and farm related organizations. JOHNSTONE, Alice Lillian WWII Alice was born in 1923 in Dominion City, Manitoba. In January of 1945, at 22 years of age, she enlisted with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps – CWAC – at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg, MB and took her basic training for six weeks. After the six weeks, she was sent to Kitchener, Ontario for further training, and then went to Kingston, ON for a few months. She then went to Kildare Annex, Ottawa, ON to the office to do filing, mail and working on the printing press in the Orderly Room. In August of 1946, she was told the war was over and that she would be leaving Ottawa for her home town of Woodmore, Manitoba.
