55 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CHING, John Victor “Vic” WWII Vic was born in Morden, MB in 1922 and was raised on a farm in Southern Manitoba. He spent his adolescent years working with his parents and younger brothers on the farm. He received his schooling in a one-room school house near the farm and in the village of Thornhill. Vic joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 6, 1941. He was stationed in Macdonald, MB where he took his wireless training. He was sent to England where he served with No. 407 Squadron Coastal Command. Vic returned home on September 28, 1945. He married Norma Spangled on June 29, 1946 and had two children. After the war, he spent his life farming. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the Royal Canadian Air Force Operational Wings and the Air Gunner Badge. He was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for 40 years before he passed away in 1986. CHRISTIE, Earl J. WWI & WWII Earl was born in Glenboro, MB in 1895. He joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary and served as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and saw active service as a pilot in Egypt. During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was appointed Chief Administrative Officer of the recruiting branch of the Royal Canadian Army. He obtained the rank of Squadron Leader. He had two sons, Robert and Bruce, who both served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Earl passed away in 1948. COJOHN, Redu WWII Redu was born in Saskatchewan in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 5th Canadian Army Armoured Division and the 3rd Armoured Brigade Infantry. Private Cojohn served in North Italy where he received a head wound. CLARK, Thomas J. KOREA Thomas was born in Minnedosa, MB in 1933. He joined the Army in 1951 and received his basic training in Picton, Ontario. He was sent to Calgary, AB for a six months mechanical course. After returning to Picton, he was sent to Korea where he served for the 4th Royal Canadian Horse Artillery for 13 months. Thomas was able to take a body shop course through the Veterans’ Affairs and returned home only to find no employment in that field. For a number of years, he worked at a garage before entering another trade. In 1956, he married and started a family. Thomas was a member of Hugh Dyer Legion Branch 138 for over 50 years.
