He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve and served with the Combined Operations Branch, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. He served in England and was in France on June 6, 1944. Norton passed away in 1995. CAWSTON, Clare W. R. WWII Clare was born in Kelwood, MB in 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1943. He was first posted to Edmonton for manning depot training before being sent to the No. 20 Pre-Aircraft Education Detachment in Saskatoon. He was then sent to No. 8 Repair Depot in Winnipeg where he was released from the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was rushed to Deer Lodge Hospital for acute appendicitis. His call from the army arrived before the end of his sick leave for which he reported to the Osborn Barracks in Winnipeg. Clare was then sent to Camp Borden, ON to be trained for the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. When the war ended, he was still at Camp Borden awaiting an overseas posting. He has been a member of Virden Legion Branch 8 for 62 years. CHAPMAN, William “Bill” WWII William was born in the Parish of Methlick, Scotland in 1916 and immigrated with his family to Clearwater in 1926 and later to Purvis, MB. He enlisted in Manitou, MB with the Manitoba Mounted Rifles on August 8, 1940. On February 12, 1943, he joined the Canadian Armoured Corps. He trained at Portage la Prairie, MB and in Hamilton, ON. Trooper Chapman was sent overseas as a member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in February 1944. He was part of the Normandy invasion, fought during the Battle of Europe, was involved in the Liberation of Holland and saw action in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Belgium. King George VI presented him with the Military Medal on December 4, 1945. He also received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. After his discharge on February 6, 1946, he returned home to farm with his wife Mabel and his family. William had been a member of the Manitou Legion Branch 21 for over 30 years before he passed away in 1972. CHAPMAN, Charlie WWII Charlie was born in the Rural Municipality of Pipestone, MB in 1914. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery 59 Field Battery. Charlie served in North Africa, Italy and Holland.
