He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in November 1941 and served as a driver with the 41st Army Transport Company in the United Kingdoms, the Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Medal. Lance Corporal Bugg was discharged in January 1946 and took over the family farm in Napinka, MB. He married Norma Innes in 1949 and raised four daughters: Lorna, Sherry, Janis and Sharon. He was a member of Napinka Legion Branch 89 for 27 years before he passed away in December 1973 at the age of 58. BUREK, Casmer C. WWII Casmer was born in Tyndall, MB on May 5, 1920. After leaving school, he farmed with his father and brothers in Hazelridge and Cook’s Creek. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served for four years and eight months, during this time he was stationed in Shilo, MB and Borden, ON. While at the Canadian Forces Base Borden, he was shell shocked after an explosion that occurred when a cannon was accidentally set off. He spent months in the hospital recovering from the incident and because of this was not sent to serve overseas. When the war ended, Casmer spent one year working at Eaton’s in Toronto before returning to Hazelridge where he farmed. He married a local school teacher by the name of Mildred Haier in 1951 and had one son, Patrick. Casmer lived in Hazelridge until he passed away in 1999. BURNETT, William A. WWI William was born in Napinka, MB on March 29, 1897. Prior to enlisting, he worked on his father’s farm. He enlisted with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles in January 1918 and returned from England in December 1918. In 1920, he married Ethel and had six children. He spent his entire life farming at Medora and Binscarth until he retired in 1965. He was a member of Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for over 50 years. William passed away in 1991. BURNETT, Melvin J. WWII Melvin was born in Napinka, MB on June 8, 1923. In November 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and in March 1942, he was sent to Aylmer and Brantford, ON where he trained as an air control tower operator instead of pilot. He was discharged in 1945. Melvin then trained as an automotive mechanic and owned his own garage in Binscarth, MB. Melvin also worked in Langenburg, SK, Neepawa, MB and Calgary, AB before returning to acreage at Binscarth, MB. He married Eva Delesoy and had a son. He was a member and former President of the Binscarth Legion Branch 74. Melvin passed in 1979.
