29 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BRADLEY, George A. WWII George was born in Newdale, MB in 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 as part of the flight crew for Lancaster Bomber in radio communication and as belly gunner. He went to Lethbridge, AB for his initial flight training and made his name as a marksman while training on machine guns. From there, he was sent to Borden, ON where he was involved in a hard landing which sent him to the hospital for back surgery and fell ill during his stay at the hospital. Since his eyesight had been damaged, he was retrained as a bomber electrician. In October 1943, he went overseas and joined No. 6 Royal Canadian Air Force Bomber Command 432 Squadron. The Squadron disbanded on May 15, 1945 and George returned to Manitoba to take up farming. He had been a member of Newdale Legion Branch 76 for 52 years before he passed away in 1998. BRANDSON, G. Oskar WWI Oskar was born on July 29, 1897 in Olafsvik, Iceland and was the first son of Onundur and Kristin Gudbrandsson’s twelve children. In 1905, they immigrated to Canada with the four oldest children and lived in Winnipeg for five years before moving to Arborg in 1910. Oskar enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 3, 1918 in Winnipeg, having been drafted in 1917 under the Military Services Act. He served with the 1st Battalion in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1925, he married Thora Hrappstead and they had one son, Allan, born in 1931. He was a member of Swan River Legion Branch 39. Oskar passed away on September 23, 1975 and is buried at the Fairdale Cemetery in Big Woody District, where he farmed. BREAKEY, William J. WWI William was born in Newtonbrook, ON in 1896. He joined the Army in World War I and served in Canada. Following the war, he moved to Manitoba and took up farming in the Pierson area. He married Pearl Bremner and they had five children. Due to the severe droughts, they moved to Vista, MB in 1934, then to Foxwarren, MB in 1944, where they farmed for nine more years. He was a member of Foxwarren Legion Branch 152. William died of a heart attack in 1964 at the age of 67 and is buried in the Foxwarren Cemetery. BRAYBROOK, Reginald WWI Reginald was born in England in 1896 and immigrated to Canada with his family when he was a young boy of seven. He attended school in the Rural Municipality of Wallace and always enjoyed sports. Reginald joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the 181st Battalion spending two years overseas. After his discharge, he spent the rest of his life farming in the Virden area. He was a member of Virden Legion Branch 8 for 30 years. Reginald passed away in 1972 and is buried in the Virden Cemetery.
