He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 28, 1941 and served as an Aircraftman 2nd class with No. 420 Squadron flying in Wellington planes in England, the Middle East and Africa. He also supported the Canadian Army when the Germans invaded Sicily. His awards include the Air Gunner Badge, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the Royal Canadian Air Force Operational Wings, as well as the 1939-45 Star. Norbert has been a member of Minto Legion Branch 201 for 5 years. BOWLES, Dennis William WWII Dennis was born in Miniota, MB on November 14, 1915 to Bella and Ernie Bowles and had two brothers, Fred and Lloyd. In 1942, Dennis enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in Winnipeg and received his basic training at Portage la Prairie before being stationed at Camp Borden. He joined the Lord Strathcona’s Horse and served in Italy, England, France, Belgium and Holland. Dennis signed up to go to Japan but the war ended while he was home on leave. He was discharged in 1945 and moved to Virden where he was self-employed working on antennas and furnaces. The Legion was important to him and he often volunteered to sell poppies and looked after the entertainment hall on Friday nights. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star and the King George Medal. Dennis was a Life Member of Virden Legion Branch 8. After his 90th birthday Dennis suffered a stroke and passed away a year-and-a-half later on April 14, 2007. BRADLEY, David E. SPECIAL DUTY AREA David was born in Newdale, MB in 1933 to Carl and Lexa Bradley. He was a member of the Strathclair Air Cadet Squadron and received a cadet scholarship to obtain his pilot’s license, which he did in 1949 at the Brandon Flying Club. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Germany, Rabat, Africa and France. On August 20, 1956, David was killed in action in France when the plane he was testing crashed. He is buried at the post war Royal Canadian Air Force Cemetery in Choloy, France. BRADLEY, Austin H. WWI Austin was born in Newdale, MB in 1894. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on January 15, 1917 and sailed to England arriving on May 14, 1918. He was transferred to the 18th Reserve Battalion awaiting deployment with the 8th Battalion to France on August 26, 1917. On September 25, 1917, he was rendered unconscious by a shell exploding near him and, while unconscious, he was gassed and buried. He was treated on the field by the No. 3 Canadian Field Ambulance in France before being transferred to No. 1 Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke on September 28, 1917 and then to various war hospitals in Europe from October 1917 to July 1918. He was discharged on December 5, 1918. He was a member of Newdale Legion Branch 76 for 55 years. Austin passed away in 1975.
