He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in June 1940 and later transferred to the Algonquin Regiment of Ontario. William was captured during the assault across the Leopold Canal in Moerkerke, Belgium on September 1944. Five hundred prisoners started on the Sager Death March which terminated in March and four hundred survived. They were finally freed on April 11, 1945. William arrived back in Canada on July 6, 1945. He is still alive today but has many health problems mostly related to his time as a prisoner. William has worked in remedial physical therapy until his retirement in 1987. WILSON, Clarke WWII Clarke was born in Boissevain, MB in 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the 2nd Regiment of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He served in France, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. Private Wilson was taken prisoner and forced to work in a coal mine for three months before being sent on a forced march for three months. WILSON, William Archibald “Archie” WWI Archie was born in Ardoch, North Dakota, United States in 1897 to William and Catherine Wilson and immigrated to the Gilbert Plains, MB at a young age. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in late 1917 and served in France until he was severely wounded at the Battle of Amiens in 1918. He served with the 3rd Canadian Division, 9th Infantry Brigade and the 43rd Battalion. In March 1919, he returned home to marry Lysette Logan and they had four children. Archie passed away in June 1975. WILSON, Robert E. WWII Robert was born in Gilbert Plains, MB on July 13, 1925 to Archie and Lysette Wilson. He spent his youth on the small family farm at Gilbert Plains, MB, and in late 1944, volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy. He served onboard H.M.C.S. Ettrick in the North Atlantic. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star and the 1939-45 War Medal. When hostilities with Germany ended, he volunteered for service in the war with Japan, and was released in December 1945. Robert married in 1949 and had four children. He worked at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company in both Flin Flon and Snow Lake, MB. He was a member of Flin Flon Legion Branch 73 and Snow Lake Legion Branch 241 for a total of 52 years. Robert passed away in February 2008.
