He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on February 22, 1944 and served as a gunner on H.M.C.S. Camrose during World War II. The H.M.C.S. Camrose was rammed by the Germans which resulted in a 28-day stay in dry dock. William was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, and the 1939-45 Star. After the war, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway until his retirement. He has been a member of Schreiber Legion Branch 109 for over 65 years. WEIDENHAMER, Hubert C. “Ham” WWII Ham was born in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and trained in Fort Garry and Camp Ipperwash. He was transferred to Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in England and Italy. In 1944, Ham was killed in action in Italy and is buried at the Ancona Military Cemetery in Italy. Weidenhamer Lake, east of Lac Brocket, was named after him in 1972. WERNER, George Charles WWII George was born in Moosehorn, MB in 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on December 8, 1943. George was killed on November 1, 1945, when the military truck he was in accidentally went over a 40-foot embankment. He received the War Medal 1939-45. George is buried in Ashern, MB. WELLISHEN, John WWII John was born in Tolstoy, MB in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during World War II.
