223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WALKER, George WWII George was born in Sinclair, MB on August 26, 1917 to George and Ellen Walker. In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 10th District Depot of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. He was discharged on January 26, 1946. His awards include the 193945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After the war, he returned to Sinclair and farmed until 1963. In 1949, he married Kathleen Skelton and they had three children. In 1963, due to health reasons, he sold the farm and moved to Reston, MB where he bought a restaurant. In 1969, he once again had health problems and had his left lung removed due to cancer. In April 1971, George sold the restaurant and moved to Virden, MB, where he resided until his passing on October 28, 1990. He was a member of Virden Legion Branch 8 for 42 years. WALLEY, Ernest C. WWII Ernest was born in Birtle, MB in 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served as a pilot. Petty Officer Walley was awarded the Gerard Murphy Memorial Award for the most promising pupil pilot of class No. 94. He was in the Special Reserve until the end of the Pacific War. Ernest has been a member of Birtle Legion Branch 55 for 50 years. WARDLE, Gordon Eugene WWI Gordon was born in Virden, MB in 1898. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 221st Infantry Battalion and the 78th Winnipeg Grenadiers in Holland, France, England and Belgium. Sergeant Wardle was discharged on June 12, 1919. He lost his superior to a blow from a grenade only a few feet from him; his superior removed his watch and ring and asked Gordon to send them along with a letter to his wife to tell her what had happened. Upon discharged, he returned to Virden, MB and married Amelia Kerr in 1923. Gordon passed away in 1968. WALSTROM, Gordon WWII Gordon was born on January 6, 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Perth Regiment, 5th Division in England and Italy. He married Irene Martin and was a member of Swan River Legion Branch 39. Gordon passed away on June 13, 2004 and is buried in Birchwood Cemetery in Swan River, MB.
