215 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TIBBATTS, Melvin E. WWII Melvin was born in the Rural Municipality of Silver Creek, MB on January 22, 1916. In June 1942, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army taking his basic training at Fort Garry in Winnipeg. He served as a Private in the Canadian Infantry Corps. After his discharge in February 1946, he purchased land though the Veterans’ Land Act and farmed along with his brother Ralph. Melvin enjoyed history and politics and had a keen mind for remembering dates and events. He was a member of Binscarth Legion Branch 74 for over fifty years. Melvin passed away on October 11, 2002. TIBBATTS, Ralph D. WWII Ralph was born on September 5, 1921 in the Rural Municipality of Silver Creek, MB. In the Fall of 1942, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army taking two months of basic training at Fort Garry in Winnipeg. He then transferred to the Canadian Signals Training Centre in Barriefield, ON where he took a wireless course. In November 1943, he went overseas and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. After his discharge in March 1946, Ralph purchased the family farm through the Veterans’ Land Act and farmed along with his brother Melvin. Ralph was involved in community affairs being a councillor and school trustee for over 20 years. He married Donelda Hertlein in 1954 and they had three children. Ralph continues to be involved with the Binscarth Legion Branch 74 and received his 60-year membership pin in 2011. TOPLEY, Glenn S. WWII Glenn was born in Morden, MB in September 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served during World War II. He was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11. Glenn passed away in August 1994. TOMLINSON, Maurice E. WWII Maurice was born in 1925. He served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in the North Atlantic during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6. Maurice passed away in 2006.
