She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 5, 1943 and served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. She received her basic training in Edmonton, AB and was sent to Ottawa, ON to be trained for teaching night vision to the troops going overseas. Staff Sergeant Thiessen taught in all the military bases in the Maritimes as part of the Medical Corps. In December 1944, she married Cornelius Thiessen. After she was discharged on September 12, 1945, she had three children and returned to studies and teaching. She and her husband live in Calgary, AB. THIRDE, William WWII William was born in Hartney, MB in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and received his training in Rockcliffe, ON, Virden and McDonald, MB and graduated from No. 2 Wireless School in Calgary, AB. He served in England and Malta with No. 233 Squadron during World War II. William was killed in action near Gibraltar in 1942. Thirde Lake, north east of Knife Lake, was named after him in 1974. THOMASSON, Thorstein Lindal WWII Thorstein was born in Brown, MB in 1919 and was the son of Arni Thomasson. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1942 and received his training in Winnipeg, MB, Debert, NS and Aldershot, NS. He served with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded twice during his service. After his discharge on January 17, 1946, Thorstein married and raised ten children in Winnipeg, MB. THOMAS, J. B. WWII J. B. Thomas was born in Hartney, MB in 1912. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 4th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery, 14th Field Battery of the 1st Canadian Corps in Britain, Italy, Holland and Germany. He was injured in 1943. He was a member of Hartney Legion Branch 26 for over 45 years and once served as Zone Commander, President and Secretary of Treasury. J. B. Thomas passed away in 1992.
