He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Scotland during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 42 years. William passed away in 2009. STEWART, Nolan K. KOREA Nolan was born in Pilot Mound, MB in 1934. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy on January 13, 1953 at H.M.C.S. Chippewa. He served on the following ships: H.M.C.S. Cornwallis from January to June 1953; H.M.C.S. Stadacona from June to July 1953; H.M.C.S. Quebec from July 1953 to January 1954; H.M.C.S. Naden from January to May 1954, December 1954 to October 1955 and November 1957 to January 1958; H.M.C.S. Sioux from May to July 1954; H.M.C.S. Ontario from July to December 1954; and H.M.C.S. Crescent from October 1955 to November 1957. He saw action in the Atlantic and the Pacific. Nolan was discharged in January 1958. He was a member of Calgary Legion Branch 1 for 25 years. STIFF, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Holland, MB in 1913. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in Winnipeg, MB on November 2, 1942. He was transferred to the 103rd Canadian Army Basic Training Center at Fort Garry, MB and from there to the Canadian Infantry Training Centres at Camp Shilo, MB and Red Deer, Calgary and Jasper, AB. He later became a qualified cook for the military personnel and served in that capacity for a year. On February 7, 1945, he was transferred to Petawawa, ON. He served with the 103rd Canadian Infantry Battalion. Private Stiff was discharged on March 8, 1946 and he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After his discharge, Bill returned home and purchased a farm through the Veteran’s Land Act. He was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62. Bill passed away in 1988. STIFF, Donald Wallace WWII Donald was born in Swan Lake, MB in 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on October 23, 1942 and trained in Winnipeg and Shilo, MB. He was sent overseas with the Saskatoon Light Infantry and disembarked in Scotland on April 3, 1943 before being drafted to Sicily and the Italian Campaign to participate in the invasion there. When the fighting subsided in Italy, his infantry moved to Holland with the Canadian 1st Division to clean up pockets of resistance there. Donald guarded German prisoners. During the war, he moved through the ranks, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. His awards include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star and the France and Germany Star. After he was discharged on November 14, 1945, he returned home, got married and had four children. Donald passed away in 2002.
