199 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SORENSEN, Aage “Ole” WWII Ole was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1914. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in England and France. In 1942, he was part of the Dieppe Raid where he was wounded and reported killed in action. Six weeks later, his family received a second telegraph stating that Ole had been found alive and was a prisoner of war in Germany. In February 1945, the German army was being forced to retreat enabling the Canadian prisoners to walk out of the camp. After days of near starvation, the survivors were picked up by the Canadian Army and taken to Luneburg, Germany. He was a member of Cartwright Mather Legion Branch 86 for 50 years and served as Past President and Zone Commander. Ole passed away in 1995. SPEER, John Charles “Charlie” WWI Charlie was born in Springfield, MB on February 12, 1897. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in May 1916 and was assigned to the 203rd Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Once overseas, Charlie was posted to the 78th Battalion of the 4th Canadian Infantry Division. He served at many battle fronts in France and Belgium, including Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. Charles was Acting Corporal when he received a serious shrapnel wound to his right thigh in September 1918. The surgeries and lengthy hospitalizations could not reverse the paralysis of his right lower leg and he had to wear a foot brace for the rest of his life. He was discharged in January 1920 and received medals for his distinguished service. He returned to Springfield and farmed until his retirement. Charlie passed away in 1965. SPENCER, Baden Herbert WWI Baden was born in Morden, MB on May 6, 1900 to Ernest and Amanda Spencer. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in France during World War I. He served for three months in France before being discharged because he was underage. He married Edith Branksworh and they had two children. He was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11. Baden passed away on April 3, 1964. SPENCER, Aime G. WWII Aime was born in Kenora, ON in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in England, Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe. He was a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for 21 years. Aime passed away in 1975.
