He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served on the high seas during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 40 years. David passed away in 2008. SMITH, James WWI James was born in Bigger, Scotland on September 10, 1887 and came to Canada around 1910. In May 1915, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and trained at Camp Hughes before being sent to England on April 29, 1916 as part of the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. Before being deployed from England, he was transferred to the Fort Garry Horse Reserve Regiment then drafted into the 8th Battalion and deployed in France. In April 1917, he was at the battle for Vimy Ridge. Corporal Smith was later wounded on the first day of the battle for Hill 70 on August 15, 1917 and was transferred back to England. After being treated for his wounds, he was discharged from hospital on February 12, 1918 and was sent back to Canada on August 16, 1918. James died on February 11, 1923, at the age of 36, as a result of lung damage due to gas on the western front leaving behind his wife and two young daughters. SMYTH, Harvey L. WWII Harvey was born in 1919. He served with the Royal Canadian Army’s Armoured Corps and with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 40 years. Harvey passed away in 2008. SMITH, Rodney T. PEACETIME Rodney was born in Portage la Prairie, MB in 1962. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 26th Field Regiment as an artillery officer. Rodney was a member of the reserves from 1987-1990.
