He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps and No. 2 Vehicle Reception Depot in England during World War II. Lynn obtained the rank of Lance Corporal. SHEFFIELD, Dorothy Joyce WWII Joyce was born in Powell, MB on January 21, 1925 to Thomas and Elizabeth Sheffield. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division on March 30, 1943 as a Clerk Steno A and had postings all over Canada during World War II. Joyce was discharged in May 1946. She married on June 14, 1947 and settled in the Pembina Valley with her husband. She was an active member of Swan Lake Legion Branch 126 for over fifty years. Joyce passed away on December 12, 2008. SHOTBOLT, Arthur H. WWI Arthur was born in Bedford, England in 1883 and moved to Canada in 1906, eventually settling in the Leifur District, MB. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1915 and first served in the 45th Battalion before being transferred to the 8th Battalion. He saw action overseas where he was severely wounded and gassed at Ypres, France. He was discharged in March 1919. Arthur passed away in 1942. SHIRTLIFF, Harold J. WWII Harold was born in Elie, MB in 1926. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in December 1941 and served with the Lake Superior Regiment. In September 1942, he was deployed to England during the height of the Battle of the Atlantic. In July 1944, he crossed the English Channel to Normandy aboard a landing ship tank. For the next twenty months, he served across Europe in the Liberation of France, Belgium and Holland. His European service ended in February 1945, during the Battle of the Rhineland, when he was wounded in the Hochwald Forest, Germany. He was evacuated back to England and eventually to Canada. After his discharge in August 1945, he purchased his first farm in Elie, MB with the assistance of the Veterans’ Land Act. By the age of 18, he was a war veteran and had begun his lifelong passion for farming. He was a Life Member of Carberry Legion Branch 238. Harold passed away in 2001.
