He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Canadian Forestry Corps during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for over 55 years. Alick passed away in 2005. SHABAGA, Alex WWII Alex was born in St. Martin, MB on October 3, 1920 to John and Anna Shabaga and was the eighth of thirteen children. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 12, 1942 and took his Special Four Mechanic Course in Dorval, QC. He was sent overseas to England in October 1944 where he served as an aeromechanic. He was discharged on June 12, 1946 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After the war, he had different jobs such as farming, winter fishing, air surveyor and tractor train driver amongst others. He married Frances Haywood in 1949 and they raised five children. He was a member of Ashern Legion Branch 57 for three years. On September 24, 2002, Alex died of a massive cardiac arrest and is buried in the Gypsumville cemetery. SHAW, Fredrick William “Fred” WWII Fredrick was born in Leicester, England in 1912. He came to Canada as a young boy and resided north of Brandon, MB. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in Manitoba in 1940, and served a pay clerk in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Fred was awarded the 193949 Star France & Germany, Star Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After discharge in 1946, he returned to Manitoba, married Renie Bourgeois in 1947, and they settled in Brandon where he worked for several companies as a bookkeeper. Fred became a Canadian citizen in 1973. He was a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for 35 years, and served as Treasurer. Fredrick passed away in 1991 at the age of 79. SHANNON, Harvey A. WWII Harvey was born in Saskatchewan in 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 12th Field Artillery and the 22nd Field Artillery in Italy, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was a member of Atikokan Legion Branch 145 for 24 years. Harvey passed away in 2009.
