183 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca RITCHIE, William WWII William was born in Saltcoats, SK on August 17, 1918 to James and Elizabeth Ritchie. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1942 and trained in Canada before being posted overseas in 1943. He was a member of Operational Squadron 419 but at the beginning of his tour he contracted hepatitis and was grounded when his first crew was shot down. Thereafter, he flew as a spare bomb aimer, completing 31 missions with six different crews between January 29 and April 9, 1945 when he returned home. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. In November 1947, he married Bernice Howie and they had two children. He farmed in the Crescent District until 1957 before joining the United Grain Growers as a grain buyer. William passed away in 2008. ROBERTSON, Edward “Ned” WWII Ned was born in Carman, MB in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in England and Italy. Ned was killed in action in Italy in 1943 and was buried in Moro River Canadian War Cemetery in Italy. ROSE, Reginald E. WWII Reginald was born in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with the 10th District Depot during World War II. Reginald has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 55 years. ROBERTSON, John WWII John was born in 1932. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 45 years before he passed away in 2007.
