179 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PRIESTON, Riley E. WWII Riley was born on December 26, 1913 in Sturgeon Falls, ON to William and Eula Prieston. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on June 14, 1941 and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Jamaica and Hong Kong. On December 27, 1941, he was taken prisoner of war and endured terrible treatment. He was released in August 1945 and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Pacific Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war, he returned home and worked on various jobs until eventually he farmed in the Big Woody District. On March 29, 1946, Riley married Helen Ingram with whom he had six children. He was a member of Swan River Legion Branch 39 for ten years. Riley died in a tragic farming accident on July 16, 1956. PRIESTON, William A. WWII William was born on September 9, 1919 in Sturgeon Falls, ON to William and Eula Prieston. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Jamaica and Hong Kong. William was killed in action on December 18, 1941. Prieston Lake near Wellman Lake was named after him in 1973. PRUDEN (STIRLING), Alma Isabel Mary WWII Alma was born on January 27, 1918 in Grandview, MB. She enlisted in the Army on May 11, 1943 and was discharged on May 9, 1946 in Winnipeg. Sergeant Stirling was involved in administrative work and was stationed at the Fort Osborne Barracks, as well as in Alberta and Eastern Ontario. After her discharge, she was employed as an accountant at D. Acklands and Sons in Winnipeg. Alma passed away in 2000. PRINGLE, Norris H. WWII Norris was born in Manitou, MB in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment in England, Italy, Germany and Holland. Private Pringle escaped death by carrying a bible given to him by his mother in the inside pocket of his tunic, this bible saved him from receiving a piece of shrapnel which would have hit his heart. Norris has been a member of Manitou Legion Branch 21 for 64 years.
