167 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca NUGENT, Evelyn M. WWII Evelyn was born in Rainey River, ON in 1917. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division on December 12, 1941. She was sent to Toronto, ON for her basic training after which she was posted to Moncton, NB and Gander, NL. During her time at these postings she also became part of the Royal Canadian Air Force drum and trumpet band where she played trumpet. Following the end of the war, Evelyn stayed in the service until her discharge on November 2, 1945. She was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Evelyn passed away in 1972. NUGENT, George T. WWII George was born in Bath, England in 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on January 20, 1940 and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He was sent overseas on September 16, 1940. He was wounded in Dieppe trying to get the wounded off the beach and was awarded the Military Medal 1939-45 for his actions at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. He returned to Canada in August 1943 as a Sergeant Instructor at the Brockville, ON Officer Training Center before returning to the United Kingdom in July 1944. He was transferred to Northwest Europe as a Platoon Sergeant and was wounded on July 24, 1944. He recovered and returned to action until the end of the war. He returned to Canada and was discharged on September 30, 1945. He was a member of Virden Legion Branch 8. George passed away in 1975. OLAFSON, Arni WWII Arni was born in Brown, MB on April 23, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in September 1942 and trained in Brandon, MB. After he was discharged, he married Linda Nagel and lived in Mossbank, SK. NUGENT, Louis G. WWI Louis was born in Chicoutimi, QC in 1883. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on July 29, 1915 in Brandon, MB. After he received his basic training, he was sent to Britain as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force where he was assigned to the Canadian Army Service Corps in France as an ambulance driver. He remained in Britain after the war ended until his discharge on November 12, 1919. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service. Louis passed away in 1938.
