165 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca NAZARKO, Walter WWII Walter was born on March 2, 1923 in Dugald, MB and grew up in Hazelridge, MB. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and received his basic training in Brandon, ON and was in the Precision Squad while there. He was sent to England where he was killed on November 28, 1944. Walter is buried at the Harrogate Cemetery in York, England. Nazarko Island, 2.5 miles from Pointe Du Bois, was named after him. NICHOL, James Arnold WWII Arnold was born on November 4, 1920 on the farm in the Rose Valley District near Killarney, MB. He received his education at Rose Valley School, a small country school a short distance from his home. He joined the Army and received his training in British Columbia. Arnold reported to C.F.B. Portage la Prairie, spending a week there getting physicals and making preparations to leave for Halifax, NS and then onto the troop ship Ile de France. He served with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Belgium, France, England, Germany and Holland. After the war, Arnold returned to the Rose Valley District and farmed until he and his wife Margaret retired to Killarney, MB in 1985. He was a member of Killarney Legion Branch 25 from 1958 until his death on December 29, 1999. NICKLIN, Joseph WWI Joseph was born in Gardar, North Dakota, United States on November 29, 1894. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in France with the Canadian Infantry 184th Battalion. Joseph was killed in action in 1917 at Vimy Ridge. NICHOLSON, Ronald K. WWII Ronald was born in Oakville, MB in 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an airframe mechanic with Bomber Command in England during World War II. He married Jean Bailey in June 1945. While on their honeymoon in Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire, they went swimming and Robert was pulled under and his body was only recovered a week later. Robert was buried in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Manchester.
