139 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MARSH, Clifford J. WWII Clifford was born on January 10, 1924 in Sleeman, ON to Bob and Rena Marsh. Private Marsh enlisted in April 1941 at the age of 17 and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He received his training at Fort William, ON and Winnipeg, MB before transferring to the Winnipeg Rifles and sailing for Hong Kong. On Christmas Day 1941, he was captured by the Japanese and taken to a prisoner of war camp in Osaka, Japan. He died two years later on January 19, 1944 as a prisoner of war but his parents did not receive word of his death until February 13, 1945. Clifford is buried at the 1st Canadian Section of British Commonwealth War Cemetery in Osaka, Japan. MASSON, James Harold WWII Harold was born in Pilot Mound, MB in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a leading aircraftsman with the Motor Transport No. 8 Repair Depot. His duties include retrieving crashed planes, running cranes, crash tenders, fire trucks and other transport duties. In March 1945, he went overseas and served in Belgium, Holland and England. He also served with No. 409 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force until it was disbanded in July 1945. In March 1946, he returned to Winnipeg, MB. He was a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for over 45 years. Harold passed away in 1999. MATTSON, Roy M. WWII Roy was born in 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in the Infantry in Europe, Holland and Germany during World War II. Roy has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 38 years. MATSON, Harold E. WWII Harold was born in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in Holland during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 52 years before he passed away in 2002.
