129 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LAPOINTE, Harold D. WWII & PEACETIME Harold was born in Dresden, ON in 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and trained at McDonald, MB. He served as an air gunner in England during World War II. He was shot down in May 1944 and was a prisoner of war until 1945. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1950 and served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Europe from 1955 to 1959. Harold passed away in 2010. LAWSON, Robert J. WWII Robert was born in the Rural Municipality of Pembina, MB in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry and the Canadian Active Service Force in England, the Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. He obtained the rank of Trooper and was qualified as a driver operator in the Canadian Armoured Corps. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for 44 years. Robert passed away in 1998. LESLIE, Lyle S. WWII Lyle was born in Elkhorn, MB in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on June 16, 1941 and received his training in Winnipeg. He served with 18th Armoured Car Regiment which was renamed the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. While stationed in Camp Shilo, he married Violet Leslie on October 4, 1941. After Pearl Harbour, he was called to guard the coast on Vancouver Island. He arrived in Glasgow, Scotland on August 27, 1941 and from there he went to England. He served as a wireless operator in a Staghound until he was made crew commander in one. In 1944-45, he served in Belgium and Holland and was in Germany when the war ended. He came home in late October 1945 on the Queen Mary. He settled in Virden, MB to farm and raise five children. He was a member of Virden Legion Branch 8 for 54 years before he passed away in 1999. LEPINE, Robert WWII Robert was born in Gladstone, MB in 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Army during World War II. He served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and the Winnipeg Grenadiers. Robert has been a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110.
