He joined the Royal Canadian Army on March 26, 1916 and received his training in Camp Hughes, MB. He served with the 209th Battalion at Maple Creek, SK before going overseas where he got transferred to the 10th Battalion whose ranks had been decimated by the fierce fighting. He was wounded in the back and thigh and sent to England to recuperate before returning to France. He then lost an eye and was once again returned to England at which point he was discharged. Charles passed away in 1979. KEOWN, Melville M. WWII Melville was born in Windygates, MB in 1912. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on June 25, 1942 in Winnipeg and received his basic training at Fort William, ON and his advanced training in Shilo, MB. That Fall, he was moved to Vancouver where he lived in the Forum building in Hastings Park before moving to Nanaimo in the Spring. He knew he was being trained for a new posting but did not find out where until they were on the ship to the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific. The Japanese had taken these islands but by the time they arrived in Kiska they had pulled out leaving booby traps behind. He left Kiska to come home on January 1, 1944. He was then sent to Holland and was on the front lines of battle until the war ended, at which time he was transferred to the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He stayed in Holland as part of occupational troops for several months before going home in February 1946. Melville passed away in 1989. KETONEN, Oke E. WWII Oke joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Canadian Infantry Corps in the United Kingdom during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 25 years. Oke passed away in 2004. KEOWN, William Henry WWI William was born in Mowbray, MB in 1899. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and served during World War I. William went missing in action in Europe on November 10, 1917 and is presumed to have died on that date.
