He joined the Royal Canadian Army in February 1945 and received his basic training at Fort Garry, MB and his advanced training in Petawawa, ON. In July, he was transferred to No. 132 Internment Camp at Medicine Hat, AB and attached to No. 27 Company, Veterans Guard of Canada. He guarded prisoners of war in Edmonton and Wainwright, AB until June 1946, when the prisoners were sent back to Germany and the camp was closed. Robert was promoted to Lance Corporal and discharged on July 2, 1946. JOYNT, George Ivan WWII George was born in Briarwood, MB in 1912. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on February 2, 1942 and served with the No. 12 District Depot in the United Kingdom, Italy, Holland and Germany. Private Joynt was discharged at 30 years old. He has resided in Ceylon, SK, Elkhorn and Brandon, MB. He was been a member of Elkhorn Legion Branch 58. George passed away in 1978. KENWARD, Lloyd PEACETIME Lloyd enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and trained at the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON and the Royal Roads Military College in Victoria, BC. KEATS, Thomas Frederick “Fred” WWII Fred was born in Dauphin, MB in 1925. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on January 8, 1944 and completed his training in Brandon before being sent to England. He served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in England for a very short time before being sent via ship to Italy where he was posted to infantry reinforcement with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. From Italy, his troop passed through Belgium and France to Germany where they met up with other troops and entered Holland where he stayed until the end of the war. He was discharged on June 8, 1946. Fred returned to Holland on three occasions, the last being the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland in 1995. He wasn’t diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome until the late 1980s and finally received psychological counselling. Fred passed away in September 2000.
