103 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HALL, Charles Edward “Chuck” WWII Chuck was born in Emo, ON on January 4, 1921 to Grace and Frederick Hall. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army on February 21, 1941 in Winnipeg, MB. After basic training, he was posted to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. In July 1942, he went overseas to Aldershot, England for further training. His unit was the second wave in on Juno Beach, Normandy on June 6, 1944. He served in Belgium, Holland and Germany. His most painful memory was of an enemy officer executing 28 of his comrades. He was discharged when he returned to Canada in March 1946 and married Joan who was in the Women’s Royal Naval Service. He was employed with Canada Customs from 1961 until retirement in 1986. He was a Life Member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for 57 years. Chuck passed away in 2003 at the age of 82. HAMILTON, John Hedley WWII John was born in Brandon, MB in 1922. In October 1942, he enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and completed his basic training at Fort Osborne. He then joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles before sailing to England in August 1943. John was at Juno Beach in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and was wounded when shrapnel hit him in the face. Less than a month later, at Carpiquet Airport, he sustained additional wounds to his upper right arm, nose and right eye. Following his discharge, John returned home to Brandon and married Isabel Watson in 1951 with whom he had two children. He joined The Legion in Pipestone in 1941 then transferred to Brandon Legion Branch 3 in 1951 and was a member for a total of 61 years. John received many awards including the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Medal, the highest award granted by The Royal Canadian Legion. HANSON, Cecil Leroy WWII Cecil was born in Swan River, MB on November 22, 1910 to Abe and Dora Hanson. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in Winnipeg, MB on June 9, 1944, trained in Red Deer, AB and was shipped overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. Private Hanson served in the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe. His awards include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the France and Germany Star. After his discharge on June 29, 1946, he returned to Swan River where helped on the family farm and was a truck driver. He then worked at the Hudson Bay Mine and Smelting Company at Flin Flon and finally retired to Swan River, MB. He was a member of Swan River Legion Branch 39 for 47 years. Cecil passed away on April 20, 1998 and is buried in Fairdale Cemetery in the Big Woody District. HANNA, Lloyd L. H. WWII Lloyd was born in Keys, MB on November 9, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in the Philippines and Hong Kong. He was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 for 40 years before he passed away on September 21, 2007 at the age of 83.
