101 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GRETSINGER, George C. WWII George was born in Beausejour, MB in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served as an aero-engine/airframe technician in Pennfield Ridge, NB, Rivers and Winnipeg, MB during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 at the end of the war. His enthusiasm and spirit of community life continued through the years with service given through the Masons, Shriners and Eastern Star service groups. He was an active volunteer for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He was a member of West Kildonan Legion Branch 30 and Charleswood Legion Branch 100 for over 20 years. GUNBY, Ken WWII Ken was born in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with No. 419 Moose Squadron in Europe during World War II. Ken has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 56 years. HAGYARD, Russell E. WWII Russell was born in Pilot Mound, MB on January 11, 1920. In 1941, at the age of 21, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army and served as an armoured fighting vehicle mechanic. He shipped out to England where he was attached to the British Eighth Army under Field Marshall Montgomery. He was sent to Italy with the British and after the Normandy landings was sent to Holland. He returned to Pilot Mound in 1948. In 1951, he moved to Winnipeg and joined Air Canada. He was transferred to Montreal in 1960 where he finished his career in 1985. Russell passed away on October 11, 1996. GUSTAFSON, Walter H. WWII Walter was born in 1912. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry during World War II. He was a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for 15 years. Walter passed away in 2008.
