He farmed in the 1-6 District south of Morden before enlisting in the Canadian Army on June 5, 1918. Elis served in France where he was killed in action in 1918. HENDERSON, C. A. “Gus” WWI Gus joined the Canadian Army and served at St. Éloi, Ypres, Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, Amiens and Arras during World War I. He was with the 27th Battalion in 1914 and transferred to the Canadian Light Horse in 1917. Gus was wounded on May 26, 1916. He spent 43 months fighting in France and received the Mons Star. HENRICKSON, Wilfred Oswald “Ev” WWII Ev was born in Kawa, Ontario on October 12, 1923. He started working for the Canadian National Railway at the age of 14 and retired as a locomotive engineer with 59 years of service. In 1940, Ev joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on HMCS Athabaskan 1 as a signalman until the ships’ sinking on April 29, 1944 off the coast of France. He spent the remainder of the war as a POW in France and Germany until his liberation. By the end of the war, Ev had served in Canada, England, in the North Atlantic, the English Channel and on the Murmansk Run to Russia. For the past 60 years, he continued to serve his country as a veteran, attending reunions with his shipmates and speaking at Legion branches. He was a member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for thirty-six years before he passed away on April 26, 2009 at the age of 85. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Rosemary of 47 years. HENDERSON, Harry WWI Harry was born in England. He joined the Canadian Army and served in Northern France during World War I with the 45th Battalion, then re-enforced the 79th Battalion.
