95 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HAYWOOD (BEDORE), Doris M. WWII Doris was born on March 4, 1925 in Belmont, Manitoba. In January 1944, she joined the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force, took her basic training at Trenton, Ontario, and trained as a Nurse’s Aide at Rockcliffe, Ontario. The Military Hospital in Brandon was her first and only posting. While there, she met her future husband who had just returned from overseas. He was discharged in December 1945 and Doris was discharged in January 1946. She and Glendon Lake were married on Christmas Eve in 1945 and they resided in Nipigon, Ontario where Glen worked as a station agent for the CPR. They had two teenage daughters when Glen passed away at the age of 41. Doris held several different positions after this until she met and married Leo Bedore and they moved to Marmora. Leo died in July 2002. Doris was a member of Nipigon Legion Branch for 23 years and Marmora Legion Branch for 25 years before she passed away in 2009. HAYWOOD, Frank C. WWI & WWII Frank was born in Sheffield, England on November 12, 1889 and came to Canada in 1914. He joined the Army in 1916 and served overseas with the 100th Grenadier Guards and the 78th Battalion. After months in the cold muddy trenches in Ypres, France, he caught pneumonia, double pneumonia and had mustard gas damage to his lungs. He was also blind for six months. Discharged in March 1919, he obtained land through the Veterans Land Act but returned to Belmont when farming did not work out. He married Ethel Bass, had two daughters, and farmed from 1930 through the depression years. From 1943, he guarded prisoners of war in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Vernon, Sea Island, Schriber and Ignace. Discharged in 1945, he returned to the farm but moved to town for health reasons in 1948. He worked for the school and became very active in the Boy Scout movement. On November 28, 1970, Frank died of lung cancer. He was a member of Fairford Legion Branch for ten years and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal Ribbon and the War Medal 1939-45. HEBERT, Margaret M. WWII Margaret was born in 1924. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and served in Canada during WWII. Margaret has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for thirty-seven years. HEBERT, Larry W. PEACETIME Larry was born in 1947 and he served in the Forestry Corps during peacetime. Larry has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for twenty-four years.
