91 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HARDWICK, Walter A. “Bud” WWII Bud was born in 1924 in Lockport, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Navy in May 1943 as an Ordinary Seaman at HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg. He served in the North Atlantic on HMCS Naden, HMCS Protector, HMCS Avalon and HMCS New Westminster and was discharged as Able Seaman from HMCS Chippawa on October 18, 1945. He returned to Selkirk and began work with the Manitoba Rolling Mills. Wally was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for thirty years before he passed away in 2001. HARDY, John WWI John was born in Scotland. He joined the 90th Battalion in 1915 then was drafted into the 8th Battalion. John served in England, France and Belgium and was killed in action in 1917 at Passchendaele. HARRISON, Wilfred Stanley WWII Wilfred, son of Stanley and Winnifred Harrison of Emo, Ontario, joined the Canadian Army and served in the Lake Superior Regiment (Motor) during World War II. He was killed in action on September 12, 1944 and is buried in a cemetery in Belgium. HARKNESS, Roy E. WWII Roy was born in 1919 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He did his Army training mostly in British Columbia and in 1943, took part in the Kiska Expedition. In June 1944, Roy went overseas as a Fusilier and into France as a replacement. From then on, he fought with the 2nd Division, with the Black Watch from Montreal, through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was at Brammershaven in the North Sea on May 8, 1945 and very surprised to still be alive. He did occupation duty and also hauled supplies by truck from Calais to war-torn countries. Roy sailed for home in November on the Princess Elizabeth and returned to farming. In May 1946, he married his fiancée and together they raised five children. Roy retired to Brandon, Manitoba where he died in 2004.
