89 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HANSON, George WWI George was born in St. Thomas, North Dakota, USA in 1891 and the family moved to Dugald, Manitoba in 1902. He attended the University of Manitoba and was at Harvard on scholarship obtaining an M.A. in 1916 when WWI interrupted his studies. He returned to Winnipeg to enlist with the Royal Flying Corps. He won his wings in Toronto and after a brief gunnery course at Fort Worth, Texas, was posted to England where he served for a few months in the Royal Air Force as instructorpilot. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and obtained a Ph.D. in Economic Geology in 1920. He joined the permanent staff of the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa and became Director from 1953 to 1956 when he retired. He was a competitive golfer, curler and marksman. George was married to Agnes Beattie Clemens and he passed away in 1967. HANSON, Ingolf WWI Ingolf was born in 1889 in St. Thomas, North Dakota, USA. He was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined on January 16, 1918, serving with his brothers Swan and George. After WWI, he worked in the Canadian National Railway shops in Transcona, Manitoba doing architectural work until 1927. Then he went to San Diego, California and spent most of his time tuna fishing and gold mining. He was an entrepreneur who had his own boat and fished along the coast of California and South America. Ingolf was a bachelor when he died in California in 1966. HANSON, Swan WWI Swan was born in St. Thomas, North Dakota, USA in 1887. He was called to serve in WWI, joining his brothers Ingolf and George, and enlisting in the #10 M.D., First Depot Battalion to serve in Canada with the Manitoba Regiment. Swan homesteaded in Saskatchewan from 1917 to 1920 and was drafted under the Military Service Act on June 5, 1918, serving until August 17 when he went on leave for the farm harvest. He then was struck off strength on December 29, 1918 and later farmed in the Dugald, Manitoba area. He served with many community groups, was Councillor for the RM of Springfield from 1921-24 as well as from 1935-1942. He was also Director of the Springfield Agricultural Society in the mid 1920s and the first John Deere equipment representative in the area. Swan was an entrepreneur who married Alice Thomsen and had two children. He died in 1952. HANSON, Oscar WWI Oscar was born in St. Thomas, North Dakota, USA in 1884 and he moved to Dugald, Manitoba in 1902 with his family. He served in the Canadian Army in World War I. Oscar never married and he stayed on the family farm until 1947. He played a musical instrument in the music groups assembled for the community Friday night dances in Dugald, regularly played cribbage with neighbours and also had a share in a cabin at White Lake with the Percy family. Oscar played a part in starting the Springfield Curling Club, was the First President from 1946-47 and had purchased a pair of curling rocks to help start the casual curling three years earlier. He was also an excellent shot, winning many trophies, and was on the Bisley Team competing in Ottawa several times. Oscar passed away in 1955.
