He enlisted in Winnipeg with the Fort Gary Horse Regiment of the 10th Armoured Regiment and served in Canada, England and Europe. He was killed in action on June 11, 1944 at the age of 34 and was interned in the Bayeux Memorial in Calvados, France. Harry is commemorated on page 325 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance. Haider Lake, west of Nueltin Lake, was named after him in 1972. HALE, Gerald J. WWI Gerald joined the Canadian Army and served during World War I. He fought at Vimy, Lachelette, Hill 70, Thielus Wood, Arras, Canal du Nord, Cambrai and Valenciennes. Gerald was also wounded and gassed at Passchendaele and he entered Mons on Armistice Day. HAMLIN, Anthony WWII Anthony was born in 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and he served in Canada and England with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during WWII. At 20 years of age and as a recent business school graduate, Anthony was sent to the Recruiting Office to work administration and payroll. He left Winnipeg for Neys Camp 100, a German POW camp in northern Ontario where high profile Nazis were held, including Ernst Hanfstaengl, Hitler’s pianist and confidante. He was excited to be sent into the real war, he thought, when he sailed on one of two U.S. warships to the Aleutian Islands only to be dropped off on a safe island with his Pay Officer. Their job was considered very important as the men needed to be paid. He also recalls D-Day where every available man was needed for the operation and their paperwork had to be in order before they could go. He describes this as a madhouse. Anthony never did see the front lines but his efficient service behind the scenes made life at least somewhat bearable for his comrades who did. HAMILTON, Adam WWI Adam was born on April 3, 1897. He joined the Canadian Army during World War I and served as a Private in Europe. He was killed in action on September 2, 1918 in Pas de Calais, France.
