77 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GÉLINAS, Gilbert H. KOREA Gilbert was born in Lawrence, Manitoba on September 27, 1928. He joined the Canadian Army and served in Korea with the Royal 22nd Regiment. He was wounded on the front lines and spent two months in a Canadian Forces hospital before returning to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is now retired and has been a member of Charleswood Legion Branch 100 in Winnipeg. GEORGE, Thomas Rowland “Rollie” WWI Rollie was born on October 22, 1893 in Springfield, Manitoba. He enlisted with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in April 1916 and served in the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Cavalry on many battle fronts in France and Belgium. Although wounded in action in December 1917, Sergeant George was able to return to the battle front on recovering. Rollie received medals for gallant actions in battle. He was discharged in June 1919 and returned to Springfield where he married his local sweetheart, Edith Speer. They took ownership of the George family farm where they stayed until he retired at age seventy. Rollie was active in his community and had a keen interest in politics; however, he reluctantly passed up the opportunity to run federally for the Conservative Party. He died in 1983. GILBEY, John Percy WWI John was born in 1893 in London, England. In 1915, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army and served overseas with the 44th Battalion. He served in the European War, France and Belgium and was wounded before being honourably discharged in 1918. John was a member of Elmwood Legion Branch 9 and passed away in 1969. GIBSON, John Alexander WWI John was born on February 4, 1898 in Rosebank, Manitoba. He lied about his age in order to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on March 1, 1916. He served in the 222nd Overseas Battalion and arrived in England on the SS Olympia on November 20, 1916. John fought at Passchendaele and Vimy but after the war, he never wanted to speak of the trenches of death. He died in Morden, Manitoba on August 4, 1970, twenty miles from Rosebank.
