He served in England as a Flight Sergeant with the Royal Canadian Air Force flying bombing missions. Michael later transported relief supplies to war-torn countries. FUREY, Patrick WWII Patrick was born in Northern Ireland in 1922. During World War II, he served as a Private with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in England and Italy where he was killed in 1943 by machine-gun fire at the Battle of the Moro River. GALBRAITH, Elmer Franklin WWI & WWII Elmer was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1896. He served in England as a Private with the Canadian 1st Corps during World War I. He also served in England with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Elmer passed away in 1961. GAFFRAY, Edward William “Ted” WWII Ted was born in Alberta on February 3, 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and after completing training as a navigator, was posted to England where he flew in Halifax bombers with 426 Thunderbird Squadron, operating from Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire. On one notable flight, his aircraft was extensively damaged by anti-aircraft fire and an ensuing fire separated one engine from the aircraft. Fortunately, they were able to crash land without fatalities at an emergency field in England. Following the war, he continued his career with the Air Force specializing in radio, radar and communications. Sergeant Gaffray spent several years in Germany, Montreal and finally in Ottawa prior to his retirement. He passed away on May 10, 1986.
