He joined the Canadian Army in World War II and served as a Gunner in Canada, England and Italy with the 23rd Regiment, SPRCA, and the 31st Battery. He has been a member of St. James Legion Branch 4 in Winnipeg. FIELDS, Wellington G. J. “Welly” WWII Welly was born in 1902. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and went overseas to England in 1940. In 1942, he went on to Italy where he served until 1943. It is not known where he served between 1943 and 1945, the year of his discharge. Welly passed away in 1986. FINLAY, Albert WWI Albert was born in Belfast, Ireland on May 29, 1898 and he immigrated to Canada with his younger sister and mother in 1915. He went to Winnipeg to enlist in the Canadian Field Artillery, 16th Brigade, after which he served in France, Belgium and Germany during WWI. After the war, he became a welder for the C.P.R., traveling many miles from coast to coast. After working for the railroad, Albert lived most of his professional life in Mississauga, Ontario. He worked for Frigidaire Appliances and General Motors doing fine welding and his last employment was at the new Woodbine Race Track where he constructed some of the towers. He became a foreman in their maintenance shops and maintained the starting gates. Albert retired in 1968 and was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 before he passed away on February 21, 1988. He is buried in the Gladstone Cemetery. FINDLAY, Oscar W. WWII Oscar was born in 1911 in Shoal Lake, Manitoba and he worked at carpentry with his brother who was a veteran of the first war. In 1941, he joined the Army and was attached to Lord Strathcona’s Horse. Trooper Findlay was then trained on tanks and shipped to England and Europe where he saw action during the Italian campaign and in northwest Europe and Germany. Discharged on January 18, 1946, Oscar returned to civilian life and became a beekeeper in Shoal Lake. He married Elizabeth Jean Reid in 1953 who had been employed by the Federal Government in Winnipeg. Oscar had been affected by his war experiences and he led a quiet life as a beekeeper and inspector for the Provincial Government. Oscar and Elizabeth enjoyed playing golf and taking trips throughout Canada and the USA. They had no children. Oscar was a member of Shoal Lake Legion Branch 72 for fifty years before he passed away on April 3, 1998.
