29 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BURNETT, Richard Wesley “Dick” WWI Dick was born in 1888 in Ivanhoe, Ontario and was with the 1st C. M. Rifles in France and Belgium. He joined the Army with his younger brother Sandy and fought at the Somme, Arras and Vimy where Sandy was killed. Dick was wounded very badly and spent two days in a shell hole until he was rescued. He subsequently lost his leg at the hip after many operations to remove shrapnel. Dick became postmaster in Sperling, Manitoba and served there for thirty-six years. Richard passed away in 1959. BUTCHART, Russell C. WWI Russell joined the Canadian Army in World War I and served with the 27th Battalion before transferring to the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. Russell served at St. Éloi in France as well as at Ypres and Ashford. CARTER, Gordon WWII Gordon was born in 1920 in the Rural Municipality of Glenwood. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and served in England with 428 Squadron at Bomber Command. Flying Officer Carter was a POW in Germany from May 1943 to May 1945. Gordon was a member of Hartney Legion Branch 26 for more than forty years as well as a Past President. BUTLER, James E. WWII & PEACETIME James was born in Oakville, Manitoba in 1928. He joined the Army during World War II and served in Canada and Germany with the Royal Canadian Engineers. James was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and the NATO Medal. He has been a member of Erickson Legion Branch 143.
