27 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BUGG, Arthur John Richard “Art” WWII Art was born on October 3, 1919 in Lauder, Manitoba and his family moved to Napinka in 1928. He enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg in April 1940 and was based in England for 39 months, much of that time spent at Bordon Camp in Hampshire, west of London. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in February 1943 and served as a driver. In October of that year, his unit was engaged in Sicily before making its way through Italy and then on to the Netherlands in February 1945. Art was discharged in October 1945 and a year later, married Lois Gertrude Bodkin with whom he farmed in Napinka until retiring to Melita, Manitoba in 1979. He was an active member of Napinka Legion Branch 89 for fifty-eight years before passing away at his home in Melita on October 27, 2004. BULL, Lew WWI Lew joined the Canadian Army during World War I and served in England with the 222nd Battalion. BURNETT, Henry Alexander “Sandy” WWI Sandy was born in 1898 in Ivanhoe, Ontario but he was living on his father’s farm near Rosebank, Manitoba at the beginning of World War I. He joined the Army with his brother Richard and fought at the Somme as well as at Vimy Ridge. Sandy was with the 1st C. M. Rifles in France and Belgium. On April 9, 1917, he suffered almost a direct hit from a shell and was killed instantly. BURCZYNSKI, Piotr WWII Piotr was born on October 22, 1920 in Cryzykow, Poland. In 1940, his family was deported to the Soviet Union and in 1942, Piotr joined the Polish Army under General Wladyslaw Sikorski. He was deployed to Iran, Iraq, Palestine and Egypt where the 2nd Polish Corps was formed and joined the British 8th Army for the invasion of Italy. He fought in the horrific battle of Monte Cassino and was also at Ancona and Bologna. Piotr received the Star of War 1935-1945 Medal, the Italy Star and the Cross of Monte Cassino. In 1946, he came to Canada where in 1950, he met and married Helena. They were married for 60 years and had two children and two grandchildren. Piotr was a member of the Polish Combatants Association #13 and Andrew Mynarski VC RC #34. He was also a founding member of Polish Legion Branch 246 for more than forty-two years.
