He has been a member of Fort William Legion Branch 6 for fifty-one years. YEO, Herbert Roy “Herb” WWII Herb was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba on April 23, 1920. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in 1939 and was posted to the United Kingdom. He also served with the Canadian Forestry Corps in Canada, the Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. While driving an ambulance, Herb sustained a shrapnel wound in his shoulder. He was discharged on December 7, 1945 and returned home to celebrate Christmas with his family and friends. Herb met Elaine Wilson in 1954 and they were married on July 6, 1957. They began farming but he died of a massive heart attack on November 9, 1960. He was one of eight Yeo cousins who enlisted from the little town of Swan Lake, all of whom survived the war. Herb was a member of Swan Lake Legion Branch 126 before he passed away. ZEGHERS, Arthur J. WWII Arthur was born in St. Alphonse, Manitoba in 1917. He served with the Vancouver Coastal Brigade, the Oxford Rifles and the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in Canada, Holland and Germany during WWII. Arthur’s first posting was on a secret mission on Yorke Island, a deserted island off the west coast of Vancouver. This was to set up a base in the forest to scope out any invasion from the Japanese trying to enter from the west. He traveled there on the Princess Elaine. Arthur was a member of Holland Legion Branch 121 for sixty-four years before he passed away in 2008. ZABAWSKI, Teofil F. WWII Teofil was born on March 2, 1917 in Kupiczwola, East Poland. Late in 1939, he was deported to the Soviet Union and into their Army but after a hand injury, the Soviets deported him to a labour camp in the Urals. He spent 18 months there and in 1941, was released and had to make his way to Persia to meet with the British where he signed up with the Polish Navy. This required traveling through Persia, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine to England where he was assigned to a ship. After the war, he married and settled in Edinburgh, Scotland. Teofil immigrated to Canada and arrived in Winnipeg in 1958. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1968 and was one of the founding members of Polish Canadian Branch 246 where he held various positions, including President in 1975 and Vice-President in 1985. Teofil received the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Polska Swemu Obroncy, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the 60th Diamond Jubilee.
