He joined the 222nd Battalion, transferred to the 44th Battalion, and fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Arthur was badly wounded in the back and spent 12 months in hospitals in France and England. WEST, Fred WWI Fred joined the Canadian Army and served in Manitoba with the 222nd Battalion. He died in hospital in 1916 and is buried in the Brookside Cemetery. WHIDDEN, A. A. WWI A. A. Whidden joined the 222nd Battalion, which re-enforced the 44th Battalion, then transferred to the Battalion Scout and Sniper Section. He served at Vimy, Passchendaele and Amiens. WHETTER, R. J. Clinton WWII Clint was born at Dand, Manitoba in 1919. After completing his degree in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, he joined the RCAF in 1942 and trained in Canada, England and Scotland. Flight Lieutenant Whetter and his crew were posted to the 425 Alouette Squadron in Tholthorpe, Yorkshire, and then selected to Pathfinder Force, Gransden Lodge England, flying a total of 60 OPS over Western Europe. Clint was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his skill, courage, and determination. Discharged in May 1945, he returned home, married Dorothy Keeler and began farming at Dand. Together, they raised a family of four and were stalwart members of the community. Clint practiced and promoted soil conservation throughout his farming career for which he was inducted into the Canadian Conservation Hall of Fame and the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame. At 93, Clint continues to be a member of Hartney Legion Branch 26.
