229 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WEEDMARK, Frederick Robert WWII Frederick was born in Dominion City, Manitoba on April 16, 1917. He enlisted in the Army on December 9, 1943 at the age of 26, leaving a wife and three small children behind. He felt he had to serve in order for them to keep their freedom. Frederick took his basic training in Ontario and served with the 1st Battalion Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe. His unit, which gave him the nickname Stoney, was shipped overseas in January 1944 and they landed in France. He was injured overseas and was left with fragments of shrapnel in his back. Frederick was awarded the Star of France Medal and was honourably discharged on May 20, 1946. He returned home and joined the Roseau Valley Legion Branch 160 where he was a Life member for fifty-five years before he died in 2001. WELLS, George WWII George was born in 1922 in Tyndall, Manitoba. He joined the Army in Winnipeg and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles during World War II. George died in 1981 and is buried in Tyndall. WEST, Albert C. WWI Albert was born in Glenholm, Nova Scotia in 1880. He joined the Army and served with the 174th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, 14th Reserve Battalion and the 43rd Battalion in Lens, Amiens and Arras where he was awarded the Military Medal. During an operation for appendicitis in 1923, Albert succumbed to the anesthetic due to the effects of being gassed in Northern France. WENINGER (SOLNES), Bernice L. WWII Bernice was born in 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. She joined the Canadian Army and served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in Canada during WWII. Sergeant Weninger was discharged on July 3, 1946. While not a member, Bernice has remained connected to the Roseau Valley Legion Branch 160, helping with the music for special functions.
