He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Vancouver on August 14, 1915 and served with the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regular), 7th Battalion. George was sent to Europe in May 1916 and he saw action in France and Flanders from October onwards. George survived Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917 and was wounded at the Battle of Arras on April 13, 1917. He died of his wounds at #7 Canadian General Hospital at Étaples, France on April 30, 1917. George is buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery at Pas de Calais. STRATH, Jean E. WWII Jean was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1925. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1944 and served in Canada during World War II. She took her initial training in Kitchener, Ontario and was posted to Halifax to the Ordnance Depot. Jean was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1945 and was discharged in 1946. SWANSON, Edwin W. WWII Edwin was born in Gonvick, Minnesota, USA on July 20, 1907. He joined the Canadian Army during World War II and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Jamaica and Hong Kong where he was killed in action in 1941. Posthumously, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Pacific Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-45 and the Maple Leaf Clasp and Hong Kong Clasp. On December 28, 1989, the Province of Manitoba named an island in Chornous Lake in northern Manitoba, Swanson Island. Private Swanson is buried in an Unknown Soldiers grave in Sai Wan Bay War Cemetery in Hong Kong. His surviving Comrades of the Canadian Hong Kong Veterans and now Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Associations have visited Pte Swanson and his fallen Comrades every five years since 1955. STRICKLAND, Henry WWI Henry joined the 45th Battalion in World War I and was sent to France to re-enforce the 28th Battalion, 2nd Division. He fought at St. Éloi and Ypres and was killed in action in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. Henry is interred in France.
